Learning outcomes

The main objective of this course is to present the mathematical foundations that are essential for a sound understanding of important scientific approaches in economics and management science. The course emphasises modelling and the solution of applications or problems in economics and management. Beyond this objective, students will develop logical reasoning, argumentation and/or the ability to prove results rigorously, as well as the ability to express their knowledge orally and in writing. They will learn to move from an intuitive understanding of concepts to their formal expression, which is essential for a certain degree of abstraction or generalisation.

Course content

The topics covered are:

  1. Basic principles of set theory
  2. Elements of logic
  3. Algebraic tools
  4. Analysis of real-valued functions
  5. Single-variable optimisation

In addition to presenting mathematical concepts rigorously, the course will cover and examine numerous examples of their applications in economics.
