Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to extend students' knowledge of real-valued functions of a real variable (integrals) and to generalise this body of knowledge, including the concepts covered in Mathematics 1, to functions of two or more variables. It also aims to enable students to apply all the mathematical concepts presented when using the main methods of economic analysis: comparative statics tools, multivariable optimisation and constrained optimisation.
Course content
The topics covered are:
- Integrals
- Functions of several variables
- Comparative statics concepts and tools: differentiation of composite functions, the implicit function theorem, first-order approximations, homogeneous and homothetic functions, and the manipulation of systems of equations
- Multivariable optimisation
- Constrained optimisation
In addition to presenting mathematical concepts rigorously, the course will cover and examine numerous examples of their applications in economics, directly related to the course’s second objective: area calculations (income distribution and economic agents' surpluses), cross and partial elasticities, comparative statics exercises, the competitive firm’s profit-maximisation problem, the consumer’s constrained choice problem, etc.
